Convert a PS/2 Mouse to a Dual Wheel Encoder

A basic wheel mouse, it doesn't know what's going to happen to it.
First step is to pull the encoder wheels
A different view of the wheels
Use a clamp to hold the encoder by the disk.
Carefully slice the shaft off the disk.
Carefully drill a hole in the center of the disk and mount it on the motor.

alignment is everything

The hard part is alignment. You should look at a "working" mouse and make sure that the relationship between sender LED, reciever device, and wheel are the same. The mouse chip is typically tollerant of some misalignment, but it is not magic.
